Environmental Studies Topics and the Stickers to Match.

Over recent decades, the study of man's impact on the environment has become a major concern all over the world. This renewed environmental concern has been, in part, driven by the attention called to environmental issues through the media (Al Gore, An Inconvenient Truth, Kyoto, Hurricane Katrina etc), but concern about the environment has also become elevated as a result of the increased destruction that is visible to us in our local areas, in terms of droughts, severe weather, pollution and deforestation. It is outside our windows, it is on the news, it is everywhere we look. It has now become important enough for us to teach.

Environmental studies has now become a major part of the school curriculum, with schools everywhere teaching students about ecosystems, climate change, pollution, deforestation, water conservation, sustainable living and species loss. Schools are now involved in river protection, tree-planting, recycling and other schemes aimed at educating students and offsetting their carbon 'footprint' on the Earth.

Environmental destruction, and the measures needed to reverse it, is a vast subject for schools to tackle in its entirety (after all, environmental damage has been happening for many centuries to all areas of the earth, its oceans and even its surrounding space - flags on the moon, anyone?). The topics that could be covered by schools are many and varied. Because of this fact, we at Concept Stickers and Cards could never hope to create stickers covering each and every environmental topic. Consequently, our environmental studies reward stickers have been designed to represent the more commonly-discussed and well-publicised topics in this field.

Generally the teaching of environmental science is divided into two major areas:
1. The environment and the ecosystems. In order to understand how pollution, species-loss and climate change can be a problem, it is vital for students to understand how healthy ecosystems work. Students are taught many environmental concepts including:

  • the water cycle,
  • the energy cycle - sunlight to plants to food and coal and so on,
  • basic photosynthesis principles and the effect on carbon levels,
  • the need for species diversity,
  • the ways in which animals, plants and the landscape interact and co-depend on each other for survival (e.g. seed dispersal by birds),
  • food chains,
  • terrestrial (land) ecosystems,
  • marine ecosystems

2. The environmental problems facing us today and how they will impact upon the natural world and the human world. Common topics taught to students include:

  • global warming - impacts on species, ecosystems, food-growing, population distribution etc.
  • the melting of the polar and mountain icecaps - impact on man's cities, loss of land for food production, environmental refugees.
  • pollution and greenhouse emissions - the effect on our air quality, the need for trees to reduce CO2, carbon capture etc.
  • local pollution - rubbish, river pollution, loss of species and ecosystems etc.
  • water conservation - drought, the loss of fresh water, water recycling, water pollution etc.
  • salinity - relating to deforestation.
  • species loss - deforestation, over-fishing, hunting, loss of habitat and breeding grounds etc.

Concept Stickers and Cards has designed a range of highly specific environmental stickers tailored to meet these individual environmental study-topics, thereby giving teachers more choice in their homework and certificate rewards.

The following section is a display of our individual environmental sticker designs and the areas of study that they would be most appropriate for.
